From Gail:In Persian poetry and literature the red poppy is considered the eternal flower of love. Poppies signify many different kinds of love, from fertility, to consolation and everlasting life. In China they represent loyalty and faith between lovers; according to a Chinese legend about a beautiful courageous woman who was married to a warrior and followed him into battle, standing at his side. The petals are said to reflect her spirit dancing in the wind, holding her sword. as her husband’s troops were defeated in battle. A cluster of poppies in full bloom was said to have grown on her grave. (Read more about poppies on m Easel tides journal website.)

Red Poppies also grow wild in Spain. We lived there when I was little girl and I remember the poppy fields. Beautiful work. Love your articulation on the petals and intricate detailing on buds (lower left). Really fun and brilliant color choices.

Gail, truly beautiful and alive! Know the fuzzy feel of the poppies. How marvelous your brushwork and intensity of the background leaves.

So interesting to read the symbology of poppies. I love poppies – The little buds are quite erotic just before they burst open! So many varieties and your painting captures beautifully the vibrancy of the colours. I also like very much the shade of blue you’ve used for the sky. Perfect!

Wow, beautiful Gail. This reminds me of a photo I took of Oriental poppies in the garden. When the film was developed I was shocked at the blue. You’ve captured it perfectly.
