This is so sweet Ray. When I first saw it I thought we had a rendering of Davy Jones’ Locker. Really sooothing and organic color palette.

I can decide if this is as genuinely sad as I think it is. Having known so many people who have endured floods and had so many things just washed away, never to be recovered is always heartbreaking. Something “found, again”, though … gives me something to think about. Which, I suspect, is what all good art should provide the viewer.

you came across with the water feel and the moths are delightful

The box cover has an appearance of a face. To me, The moths are like air escaping back to the surface. Soon the box will be empty and lost, yet life goes on.

It looks a bit like stained glass, overall. Beautiful.

William, though I don’t like to dwell on the negative things in life, you are absolutely correct in your interpretation of this picture. As the title suggests, there is an unbelievable amount of sadness represented in this picture. I’m pleased that you saw it, but I suppose the escaping moths might symbolize optimism and renewal, life finding it’s way through.
Rusty! You saw the face! That was the first thing I saw when I found this old box. Once again, we begin empty and lost but life does indeed go on, with us or without us.
Thank you Sonya, whatever the message, ‘delightful’ is always a good thing.
And Vikki, thank you once again for your kind words, I suppose ‘Davey Jones’ locker’ is also particularly apt, Davey Jones’ representing the evils of the sea twinned with escaping moths, who as we all know, are not evil. Water, the giver and the taker of life.

Ray, I like the organic and translucent feel to this. The glowing white outline around the moths rising with the air bubbles gives the feel of transformation rising from letting go of the old box below.

Thank you, Gail. Transformation, change and renewal is much of what this painting is about and I just love the translucence that can be achieved with watercolor. Lots of color overlays but always allowing the white of the paper to come through to help create that ethereal quality.
