From Vikki:
I decided to do the master of all dreamers ‘Dorothy of Oz’ as we know the story from the 1939 movie with Judy Garland., (with just some relative changes) I say ‘as we know the story’ because the ‘Wizard of Oz’ tale that we grew up with has little resemblance to the original story the Author L. Frank Baum wrote. For example- Toto….to read the rest please visit my Blog.
‘Dorothy of Oz’ is now part of my minimal palette Master Series.

Perfect addition to your series. Her dream was a great adventure and her desire to simply be with the people who loved her….
(The detail of her checked dress in incredible)

Thanks Rusty. I really love to get towards the end of the painting where it’s just detail work like the checks. Something very Zen about it.

I bow before a talent far grater than my own. Even without the nerve dmage that keeps me away from highly detailed realism, I couldn’t touch your quality. Master Series? Aptly named, methinks.

Thank you Lelan. That’s such a nice complement- especially from such a wonderful artist.
I prefer thinking of my paintings as ’realistic’ but not realism. I try to implement something in the composition, like the background in this case, that reminds the viewer ‘This is just a painting.’
And a secret- I’m actually ‘the model’ for my character’s positions. I take a picture of myself (as I’d like my character to sit or stand) for reference and then modify the shape and size as needed. In this case- I wanted Dorothy to look a bit timid, as a child would,- yet curious of the world unfolding before her. This one was a lot fun to do.

Hi Ray-
lol No that’s Judy Garlnad -not me. ( I’m a mousy blond old woman.) I just use my body for positions and to get fore-shortening correct (for instance her legs tucked under her bench.)
That little mut is one I found online. I wrote a little thing about ToTo on my blog.

I always love your detailed canvas art >=D I am pretty obsessed with textures :3 and I can’t help by staring at her dress, it is simply amazing and I love the puppy too

Hi Riika. Thanks. It was really a fun painting to do. My biggest concern with that Puppy was making sure he was ‘just small enough’ to fit in her basket.

Vikki, you’ve so captured her look of hesitant wonderment. I, too, am amazed at the checks and the basket detail…the consistency. And I enjoyed and learned what I didn’t know from your blog. Really interesting.
